F/W 2019 Trends That I Can't Get Enough Of

If I'm going to adopt a trend, it has to be something that I know is going to be in style season after season (which then begs the question, is it still a "trend" at that point?). So while I thought the fishnets-under-distressed-jeans look was mildly interesting, I knew that was going to die out almost as soon as it showed up, which it did. For me, adoptable trends are things like the color of the season, patterns that are popular, or classic pieces that have suddenly found themselves in the spotlight.

Here are five that will be getting a lot of wear time in my wardrobe in the coming months.

1. Shades of green

Whether emerald or olive, green is a color I've always loved wearing but have neglected to incorporate into my wardrobe. I figured there was no better time than now to do so, as it's popping up all over the place as a color of the season.

Madewell's Evercrest Turtleneck in Heather Pine was a nice way to bring a gorgeous, deep shade of emerald into my life — it helps that the sweater is crazy soft and cozy, too.

The Baggu Duck Bag (which I have in three colors/patterns) in Kale is not only a sturdy, incredibly roomy tote, but the color is incredibly earthy and rich, with just a hint of a brown undertone.

If you tend to shy away from bright colors like I do, emerald or olive are nice options for injecting some color into your wardrobe's palette without stepping too far out of your comfort zone. They're also timeless colors and pretty universally flattering. It's really just a matter of finding the piece that works best for you.

2. Animal print

Leopard print has been alive and kicking as a trend for quite a while now, but I've never been able to get into it. Quite frankly, I'd written off the whole animal print craze because I couldn't find anything that really appealed to me. Not a leopard spot, zebra stripe, cow hide, tiger stripe kinda gal — but as it turns out, I'm apparently big on reptile prints.

Snake skin, lizard, and croc have been really speaking to me lately, but as with nearly everything in my life I'm incredibly picky and have only incorporated a handful of things into my wardrobe.

I picked up a couple of gorgeous, vintage lizard purses from local thrift stores and antique fairs, but I've also managed to find a couple of modern pieces. The Dauani Mule from Schutz has been a go-to shoe for me this season, and a unique way of injecting some snake skin into a look. I love pairing them with neutral-colored solids to ensure they really stand out.

The croc purse in the photo to the right is something I picked up from a local thrift store; it's by a brand called Hello 3am, which I've never heard of before, but is more a testament to the power of thrifting than anything else. I love the shape of the purse, and how it flares out towards the bottom of the bag.

Animal print doesn't have to be an intimidating trend. Figure out which print you love the most, find a piece you love with that print, and have fun wearing it.

3. Chunky statement jewelry

Dainty, layerable jewelry has been in for years now, but sometimes it's nice to switch things up with something bold and heavy. Thick chain necklaces, eye-catching statement earrings, and big rings are the perfect pairing with fall and winter's chunky knits and overcoats.

I've been obsessed with Madewell's Modern Geometry Hoop Earrings; they're an unusual shape and big enough to be noticed without looking too big for my face, and not too heavy on my earlobes. I also love the brushed gold that Madewell uses for their gold-toned jewelry.

I stumbled on a new day's Thick Chain Link Bracelet while at Target recently and really love this piece; it's a nice, chunky bracelet that does some pleasant jingling while you wear it, and looks beautiful with a sharp blazer and a turtleneck. Definitely looks more expensive than it really is. Both reviews on the bracelet mention that the clasp is difficult to open and unfortunately I had the same experience; the lobster claw does open wide enough to actually wear the bracelet, but if you've got short nails it's going to make the job of getting it on kind of difficult one-handed. But I'd still recommend this for the style, especially at the price point.

As for the coveted thick chain necklace trend, it took me a while to find one that I really liked and I ended up getting it from a Poshmark seller, no brand. I know, that's not super helpful, but try Etsy; I found a number of necklaces in this style on the platform that I really liked, as well.

4. Military-inspired liner jackets

This trend snuck up on me; I'd seen a couple of influencers out in the wild wearing these military-inspired, quilted liner jackets, but then it felt like all of a sudden I was seeing them more frequently. It also seems to be a popular piece in Japanese fashion, and the first liner jacket I got was from one of a couple of Japanese sellers specializing in these jackets, at a local antique fair.

It's a look that's simultaneously cool and functional, as these jackets tend to retain a lot of warmth (perhaps unsurprisingly). Vintage liners seem to be in demand for this look, but a lot of modern brands are getting into the trend, too.

I picked up this Belted Quilt Jacket from Target's Universal Thread line and have been loving it. It's incredibly warm, feels almost like you're wearing a blanket, and is a pretty burnt sienna color (darker, and not quite as pumpkin spice as the product photos suggest). It does run a little large though; I wear XS, but even the XS is kind of big. This is good for layering, especially as the weather continues to get colder as move from fall to winter.

The Universal Thread line is clearly Target's answer to Madewell (with some of their more recent items lifted straight from Madewell designs), albeit more affordable, and I feel like this jacket would definitely have someone wondering whether you got it from Madewell or somewhere similar.

5. Teddy Coats

This is a trend that has survived at least a couple of years now, and with good reason: you can dress up or dress down a teddy coat, and I feel that some styles have a very vintage feel. A sort of "1940s kept woman" sort of glamour, like you could be serving cocktails at 2:00 pm in your home while wearing one.

While I'm being slightly hyperbolic, I am also being genuine when I say that I really like the teddy coat, so much so that I have one in three different styles.

My favorite is the Cozy Teddy Jacket from Abercrombie. I love the cut, the front pockets, and the minimal styling. While I'm normally an XS in tops at Abercrombie, I went with the XXS in this jacket and feel like it was a perfect choice. It fits snug, but I can still layer under it and button it closed if I wanted (though I'd prefer to wear it open). The cream color is really nice, too. I'm thinking of picking it up in the brown shade, too...

A couple of months ago I also picked up a more oversized teddy coat from Forever 21, but as is usually the case with their site I couldn't find it at all when I tried to link to it. But they have a number of them this year, as do a lot of other brands. From color to style, teddy coats are something I feel you have to spend some time researching before committing to one because there are just so many options out there. But once you find the one (or the ones) that you like, you'll have a great piece to keep warm in.
